Palmi: the “terrace over the Strait” and the city of the Varia

Palmi is the most important town on the Costa Viola, overlooking the sea from its high viewpoints: it is no coincidence that it is called the “terrace over the Strait”. Lively and rich in culture, it is home to the House of Culture with its museums and gave birth to one of the most spectacular festivals in the South, the Varia, recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.

Below the centre lie the Marinella beach with its famous Scoglio dell’Ulivo and, a little further on, the Tonnara; above rises Monte Sant’Elia. Between sea, culture and panoramas, Palmi is an ideal base for discovering the whole Costa Viola.

What to see in Palmi: the centre, the culture and the Varia

In the centre of Palmi stands the “Leonida Repaci” House of Culture, which brings together a picture gallery, a plaster-cast museum and the Calabrian Museum of Ethnography and Folklore, one of the most important in southern Italy. The town is the birthplace of composer Francesco Cilea and writer Leonida Repaci. The most anticipated event is the Varia, the great processional “machine” that parades through the streets in August: a centuries-old festival recognised by UNESCO. Among squares, churches and panoramic glimpses, the centre of Palmi deserves an unhurried stroll.

The Marinella and the sea of Palmi

Below the centre, the coast of Palmi offers some of the finest beaches on the Costa Viola: the Marinella, dominated by the Scoglio dell’Ulivo, and the lidos that follow on towards the Tonnara, with clear water and rich seabeds. It is a sea loved by families and snorkelling enthusiasts, framed by the green of Monte Sant’Elia. Between swims you can enjoy swordfish, the flavours of Calabrian cuisine and the sunsets that set the horizon aglow with violet.
