Monte Sant’Elia: the balcony over the Costa Viola in Palmi

Monte Sant’Elia is the promontory that dominates Palmi and the entire Costa Viola, a true natural balcony suspended between the green of the pine woods and the blue of the Strait. From its viewpoints the gaze embraces the coast, the Aeolian Islands, Sicily and, on clear days, the outline of Mount Etna.

It is one of Calabria’s most beloved spots for sunsets and one of Italy’s best-known paragliding destinations, thanks to the currents rising from the sea. Trails, picnic areas and panoramic glimpses make it the perfect outing just above the sea of Palmi.

What to see: the viewpoints over the Costa Viola

The mountain is crossed by a series of viewpoints perched sheer above the sea, offering one of the widest views in southern Italy: below, the Marinella di Palmi beach and the Scoglio dell’Ulivo; opposite, the sweep of the Costa Viola fading towards Scilla and the Strait. Trails, equipped areas and panoramic spots wind through the pine woods, ideal for a walk or a picnic. It is also a place tied to Palmi’s festivals and folk traditions, including the famous Varia.

Paragliding and views as far as the Aeolian Islands

Thanks to its position sheer above the sea and the rising air currents, Monte Sant’Elia is one of Italy’s most renowned free-flight sites: every year paragliders and hang-gliders colour the sky above the Costa Viola, with flights that offer a unique perspective over the Strait. Even without flying, the panoramic points let you follow the coast as far as Gioia Tauro to the north and the Aeolian Islands and Sicily to the south. At dusk, the sun setting behind the Strait is a sight not to be missed.

How to get to Monte Sant’Elia

Monte Sant’Elia is reached in a few minutes by car from the centre of Palmi, following the signs for the viewpoints; a scenic road climbs through the pine woods to the rest areas. By car you reach Palmi via the A2 “del Mediterraneo” motorway (Palmi exit) and by train via Palmi station on the Tyrrhenian line, from where you continue up to the mountain. The nearest airports are Reggio Calabria and Lamezia Terme. It is a stop that combines easily with a visit to Palmi and the Tonnara.
