The Tonnara di Palmi: the beach, the Olive Tree Rock and the Costa Viola

The Tonnara is the best-loved beach in Palmi, tucked into the Taureana district at the northern tip of the Costa Viola. Pale pebbles meet clear, transparent water, watched over by the silhouette of the Olive Tree Rock and the cliff of the Motta. It is a corner that brings together swimming, nature and history: nearby lie Cala Janculla and the Tauriani Archaeological Park, while the headland of Monte Sant’Elia rises above the beach.

Here the crystal-clear water invites snorkelling among rocks and shallow seabeds, and as the sun goes down the view stretches towards the Strait and the Aeolian Islands, with the sea glowing in the violet tones that give this coast its name. A perfect destination for anyone seeking an authentic day by the sea, just minutes from the centre of Palmi.

The beach and the sea of the Tonnara

The Tonnara beach is made of pale gravel and small pebbles that keep the water crystal-clear, a deep blue that turns green over the shallow seabed. It is a sheltered little bay, protected by rocks, where the sea stays calm and transparent: ideal for swimming and snorkelling, watching fish and sea urchins among the rocks. Along the shore free stretches alternate with a few beach clubs, and the setting keeps a wild character, far from the more crowded beaches. In the morning the light is perfect for a swim, while in the late afternoon the bay is transformed by the warm colours of sunset over the Costa Viola, when the sea takes on the violet tones that have made this stretch of coast famous.

The Olive Tree Rock and its surroundings

A few metres from the shore rises the Olive Tree Rock, the great boulder that gives the Tonnara its identity: the name recalls the olive tree that, according to tradition, grew there, clinging to the rock in the middle of the sea. It has become the symbol of the beach, perfect to photograph at sunset, when its silhouette stands out against a sky turning violet. All around lies the rugged, luminous landscape of the Costa Viola: sheer cliffs, hidden coves such as nearby Cala Janculla and rich seabeds for snorkelling lovers. Above the beach open the headland of the Motta and the plateau of Taureana, home to the Tauriani Archaeological Park, with the remains of the ancient settlement and views that reach the Strait of Messina and the Aeolian Islands.

How to get to the Tonnara di Palmi

The Tonnara is easy to reach from Palmi: from the centre you go down towards the Taureana district and within a few minutes by car you arrive at the beach. By car, leave the A2 “del Mediterraneo” motorway (Salerno–Reggio Calabria) at the Palmi exit, then follow the road to Taureana and the Tonnara. Travelling by train, you will find Palmi station on the Tyrrhenian line, from which you continue by taxi or local transport down to the sea. The handiest airports are Reggio Calabria (about 60 km) and Lamezia Terme (about 70 km). In summer the beach is very busy: it is best to arrive early and park in the available areas, then walk down to the bay. From here you can reach the nearby coves and the panoramic trails of Monte Sant’Elia on foot or by boat.
