Marinella di Palmi: the bay, the cliffs and the views of the Costa Viola
Marinella is the bay of Palmi, set between sheer cliffs and the pine forest of Monte Sant’Elia. It is one of the most beautiful coves on the whole Costa Viola: a crescent of pebbles and pale sand, lapped by clear water that shades into turquoise, with great rocks rising from the sea to shelter the shore from the wind.
Few places pack sea, Mediterranean scrub and mountain into so small a space. From the beach the eye climbs the wooded headland; from the Monte Sant’Elia belvedere just above, the same bay reveals itself from on high in all its geometry. A genuine corner of Calabria, close to the centre of Palmi yet immersed in nature.
The bay and beach of Marinella
Marinella beach alternates stretches of smooth pebbles with tongues of pale sand, over a seabed that shelves gently and turns clear at once. It is a small, sheltered bay, perfect for a quiet swim away from the crowds: the rocks closing the cove break the waves and form natural pools ideal for snorkelling. The water, transparent to the bottom, passes from emerald green near the shore to a deeper turquoise further out. Behind the beach the Mediterranean vegetation tumbles almost down to the sea, and the sense of seclusion is striking even though the centre of Palmi is only minutes away. It is one of the emblematic spots of the Costa Viola, to be enjoyed slowly — perhaps staying until sunset, when the light sets the rocks aglow.
Cliffs, nature and views from Monte Sant’Elia
Crowning Marinella is Monte Sant’Elia, the wooded headland that towers over the bay from around 580 metres. It is a protected area, cloaked in pines and Mediterranean scrub, laced with trails and crossed by the flight of birds of prey. From its panoramic belvedere, one of the most famous in Calabria, the gaze sweeps over the Strait, the Aeolian Islands and, on clear days, as far as Stromboli and Etna: a vista that explains why this is the Costa Viola, named for the colour the sea takes on at sunset. Climbing towards the summit you come upon the renowned Ulivo and Tonnara rocks, while the mountain also preserves the memory of local lore and tradition. With crystal-clear sea below and boundless views above, Marinella offers two experiences in a single place: swimming among the rocks and the view from on high.
How to get to Marinella di Palmi
Marinella lies on the edge of Palmi, on the side facing the Strait. By car, take the A2 “del Mediterraneo” motorway (Salerno–Reggio Calabria), exit at Palmi, then follow the signs for Marinella and Monte Sant’Elia along the scenic road descending to the bay. By train, Palmi has its own station on the Tyrrhenian line, a few kilometres from the beach. The nearest airports are Reggio Calabria (about 60 km) and Lamezia Terme (about 70 km). The beach is reached on foot along a short path that drops through the vegetation: it is worth wearing comfortable shoes and bringing water, especially in the hottest hours. In high season it is best to arrive early and park in the available areas higher up, then enjoy the bay at leisure.
