The beaches of Tropea, below the cliff

Below Tropea’s old town opens one of the most photographed scenes in Italy: a long white-sand beach, the sea changing colour with the light and, in the background, the cliff with the sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola. The Rotonda beach and the one in front of the seafront are the handiest, with lidos and free stretches; nearby, more secluded coves can be reached on foot or by boat. The water is shallow and clear for several metres, ideal for swimming and for snorkelling among the rocks. At sunset, the view from the town over the beach is simply magical.

Capo Vaticano: Grotticelle and the granite coves

The promontory of Capo Vaticano, in the municipality of Ricadi, is a succession of granite cliffs and small beaches with tropical colours. The most famous is Grotticelle, often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world, with pale sand and clear water; alongside it lie Praia i Focu and other coves reachable on foot or by boat. From the lighthouse and the viewpoints the panorama embraces the Aeolian Islands and, on clear days, the smoking Stromboli. These beaches are wilder than the town ones: you often go down by steps or paths, so it is worth bringing comfortable shoes, water and a beach umbrella.

Riaci, Formicoli and the bays of Ricadi

Between Tropea and Capo Vaticano, the Ricadi coastline hides some of the most striking bays on the coast. Riaci beach, framed by a rock and a small headland, alternates sand and rocks with deep, crystal-clear water, much loved by snorkellers. Nearby, Formicoli (Praia i Focu) and the bay of Grotticelle complete a stretch of sea with Caribbean colours. These are more intimate beaches, often reached by short paths, where you can find quiet corners even in high season. Pizzo, Nicotera and the family beaches

At the two ends of the Costa degli Dei lie long, sandy beaches, perfect for families. To the north, the Marina di Pizzo and the beaches of the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia offer golden sand, gently shelving seabeds and plenty of services, with the town just a step away. To the south, Nicotera Marina gives a wide sandy stretch facing the Gulf of Gioia, with calm waters and lidos suited to children. Access, tips and where to stay

Some beaches on the Costa degli Dei are easily reached by car or on foot from the towns, others — especially the coves of Capo Vaticano and Ricadi — require steps or short paths: bring suitable shoes, water and, where there is no service, a beach umbrella. In August it is best to arrive early to find a spot and parking; June and September offer the same sea with more peace. Many beaches have free stretches next to the lidos.
