Capo Vaticano: beaches, coves and crystal-clear sea of the Costa degli Dei
Capo Vaticano is one of the most beautiful promontories in the Mediterranean: high granite cliffs plunging into a sea that shades from emerald green to deep blue, with white-sand beaches set among the rocks. Together with Tropea, which is very close, it is the most spectacular stretch of the Costa degli Dei, in the Vibo Valentia area.
Coves such as Grotticelle and Tonicello, panoramic paths, the lighthouse on the point and, on the horizon, the Aeolian Islands with Stromboli: here the sea is the absolute star, and the sunsets are among the most famous in Calabria. A perfect destination for those seeking dreamlike beaches, snorkelling and relaxation, minutes from the coastal villages.
The beaches and coves: Grotticelle and Tonicello
The beaches of Capo Vaticano are small paradises set among the granite cliffs. The most famous is Grotticelle, a bay of pale sand and clear water, followed by Tonicello, Praia i Focu and many coves reachable on foot along panoramic paths or by sea. The clear seabed, rich in submerged rocks, is perfect for snorkelling, while some beaches are equipped and others remain wilder. To enjoy them at their best, arrive early in high season, bring rock shoes for the rocky stretches and don’t miss a boat trip to discover the caves and inlets that open beneath the promontory.
The promontory, the lighthouse and the sunsets over the Aeolian Islands
The promontory of Capo Vaticano offers some of the most famous panoramas in Calabria. From the belvedere near the lighthouse, reached by a short walk, the view sweeps over the coast, over Tropea with its cliff and, on clear days, all the way to the Aeolian Islands: Stromboli, Vulcano and the others seem to float on the horizon. It is the ideal spot to watch the sunset, when the sun sinks behind the volcanoes and the sea turns pink and orange. Paths and stairways link the various viewpoints to the beaches below: a landscape to experience slowly, camera in hand.
How to get to Capo Vaticano and where to stay
Capo Vaticano is part of the municipality of Ricadi, between Tropea and Nicotera. By car you leave the A2 “del Mediterraneo” motorway at Pizzo or Rosarno and continue towards the coast; Lamezia Terme airport is about an hour away. The area is well served in summer, but the finest beaches are reached with short walks or by boat, so it is worth checking access points and arriving early. It is the ideal place for a beach holiday to combine with Tropea and Pizzo.
