Nicotera Marina: beach, hilltop village and crystal-clear sea

Nicotera Marina is one of the most family-loved beaches on the Gulf of Gioia, where Tyrrhenian Calabria meets the Costa degli Dei. A long stretch of fine sand, fringed with pines and facing a crystal-clear sea, has earned it the paediatricians’ Green Flag.

A few kilometres away, on the hill, the historic village of Nicotera watches over with its castle and viewpoints from which you can admire Sicily and the Aeolian Islands. Easy sea, panoramas and tradition: Nicotera is the ideal destination for a relaxing family holiday.

The beach of Nicotera Marina

The beach of Nicotera Marina is wide, with fine golden sand and a gently shelving sea: that is why it is perfect for families with children and for those seeking relaxation. The water is clear and has been awarded the Green Flag over the years, the symbol of child-friendly beaches. Equipped lidos and free stretches alternate along the shore, with a view of the Aeolian Islands on the horizon. It is a sea to enjoy all day long, right up to the fiery sunsets over Stromboli.

The village of Nicotera: castle, cathedral and the Affacciu

Above the marina, the historic village of Nicotera climbs the hill with its alleys and palaces. Worth seeing are Ruffo Castle, rebuilt in the 18th century and now home to the archaeological museum, the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the ancient Giudecca quarter. The viewpoint the locals call “l’Affacciu” offers a view ranging from Sicily to the Aeolian Islands. Nicotera is also known as one of the “homelands” of the Mediterranean Diet, studied here for its eating habits.

How to get to Nicotera Marina

By car, Nicotera is reached from the A2 “del Mediterraneo” motorway (Rosarno exit), continuing towards the coast; the marina is a few minutes from the village. Nicotera railway station, on the Tyrrhenian line, serves the area, while the nearest airport is Lamezia Terme (about 60 km), followed by Reggio Calabria. From Nicotera you can easily reach the plain of Gioia Tauro to the south and the Costa degli Dei (Tropea, Capo Vaticano) to the north.
