What the Costa degli Dei is and why it has that name

The Costa degli Dei faces the lower Tyrrhenian Sea, between the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia and the Gulf of Gioia. The name, of touristic origin, celebrates a coast that seems made for the gods: beaches of fine white sand, a sea shifting from emerald green to turquoise and granite cliffs dropping sheer to the water. On clear days, from many viewpoints you can see the Aeolian Islands with Stromboli and, further north, the Sicilian coast. It is an intense Mediterranean landscape, with villages overlooking the sea and hilly hinterland behind, where citrus and vines ripen.

Tropea and Capo Vaticano, the two jewels of the coast

Tropea is the emblematic village: its old town rises on a tufa cliff sheer above the sea, with alleys, noble palaces and spectacular viewpoints. Below, on a rock, watches the sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola, the most famous image of Calabria. A few kilometres further south, the promontory of Capo Vaticano offers granite cliffs, hidden coves and Grotticelle beach, often listed among the most beautiful in the world. From its viewpoints the sunset over Stromboli is unforgettable. Tropea and Capo Vaticano are the heart of the Costa degli Dei and the main reason it is visited.

Pizzo, Nicotera and the villages overlooking the sea

Beyond Tropea, the Costa degli Dei is a succession of villages. To the north, Pizzo dominates the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia with the Aragonese castle where Joachim Murat was executed, the little church of Piedigrotta carved into the tufa, and the famous tartufo, the chocolate ice-cream born here. At the southern end, Nicotera looks down over the Gulf of Gioia, with its old town, castle and marina. Between the two extremes, towns such as Zambrone, Parghelia and Ricadi guard beaches and less crowded corners. Each village has its own identity, but all share the same extraordinary sea and the same Calabrian hospitality.

Beaches, flavours and when to go

The Costa degli Dei is famous above all for its beaches: long stretches of white sand and coves among the rocks, with clear waters ideal for snorkelling too. But it is also a land of flavours: the sweet, crunchy red onion of Tropea PGI, tuna and swordfish, spicy ’nduja, Poro pecorino cheese and the tartufo of Pizzo. The best time for the sea runs from June to September, with warm water until early autumn; June and September offer quieter beaches. Spring is perfect for combining sea, villages and excursions without the high-season crowds.

How to get there and where to stay on the Costa degli Dei

The Costa degli Dei is reached by car via the A2 “del Mediterraneo” motorway (Pizzo or Rosarno exits) and by train on the Tyrrhenian line, which stops at Pizzo, Tropea, Ricadi and Nicotera.
