Gioia Tauro: the seafront, the beaches and the plain of olive groves
Gioia Tauro lies at the centre of the plain of the same name, one of Calabria’s most fertile farming areas, covered by endless olive and citrus groves. The town has a seafront and sandy beaches facing the gulf, ideal for those seeking an easy, quiet sea, and is home to one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean.
Heir to the ancient Greek colony of Metauros, Gioia Tauro is also a practical, well-connected base for visiting the Costa Viola, Palmi and the Aspromonte hinterland. An authentic face of Calabria, between sea, countryside and town life.
The sea, the seafront and the great port
The coast of Gioia Tauro is made of long sandy beaches and a family-friendly sea, with the seafront as a place for walks and evening life. Beside the town stretches the port of Gioia Tauro, one of the Mediterranean’s major container hubs: an imposing presence that also tells the story of contemporary Calabria and its maritime trade. Between a swim and a stroll, the area offers fresh fish, ice-cream parlours and the simple hospitality of seaside towns.
The plain of Gioia Tauro: olives, citrus and flavours
Behind the town stretches the plain of Gioia Tauro, a green sea of centuries-old olive groves and citrus orchards that is one of the largest olive-growing areas in Italy. From here come extra-virgin olive oil, citrus fruit and local produce that fill the markets and the tables. It is a fascinating agricultural landscape, dotted with farmhouses and seasonal rivers, perfect to discover on short itineraries into the hinterland, up to the slopes of the Aspromonte and the villages of the plain.
How to get to Gioia Tauro
Gioia Tauro is one of the most convenient hubs in the area: by car it is reached via the A2 “del Mediterraneo” motorway (Gioia Tauro exit) and by train via a station on the Tyrrhenian line also served by long-distance trains. From here the local railway also runs towards Palmi, Sinopoli and the hinterland. The main airports are Lamezia Terme (about 60 km) and Reggio Calabria (about 60 km). Its central position makes it easy to travel to Palmi, the Costa Viola and the villages of the plain.
