The 13th contemporary drama season

Teatro Primo's new season runs from Sunday 15 November 2026 to Sunday 9 May 2027 and is the thirteenth devoted to contemporary drama. Artistic direction is again in the hands of Silvana Luppino and Christian Maria Parisi, who also run the company's drama school.

The programme, published on the Calabria Region's tourism portal, ranges across contemporary theatre, new writing, adaptations and reinterpretations of classic texts, alternating Teatro Primo's own productions with visiting companies and performers. There are thirteen titles spread over eighteen performance days, nearly always on a Saturday or Sunday, with two midweek dates during the early-January holidays.

Programme from November to December 2026

The season opens on Sunday 15 November with Via Crudele. Two weeks later, on Sunday 29 November, comes Tracollati. On the first weekend of December, Saturday 5 and Sunday 6, Era ottobre is staged on two consecutive days.

The last show of the year is on Sunday 20 December, a few days before Christmas, with Tutte mie “Original Version”. For these four titles the sources give only the date: companies, cast, director and start time have not yet been announced, so ask the theatre.

Programme from January to May 2027

2027 begins with two consecutive evenings during the holidays: Il Tartufo on Tuesday 5 January and Terapia di gruppo on Wednesday 6 January. Anna Cappelli follows on Sunday 17 January, Lo cunto de li cunti on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 January, and Il calapranzi on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February.

Spring opens on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 March with Il circo capovolto; then come Spleen Records on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 April and La carta da parati gialla on Sunday 18 April. The season closes on Sunday 9 May 2027 with Gli effetti persona.

Classics revisited and repertoire titles

Several titles point to well-known texts: Il Tartufo is Molière's comedy about hypocrisy, Tartuffe; Lo cunto de li cunti is Giambattista Basile's collection of fairy tales in Neapolitan, known in English as The Tale of Tales; Il calapranzi is Harold Pinter's one-act play The Dumb Waiter; and La carta da parati gialla is Charlotte Perkins Gilman's story The Yellow Wallpaper. Details of the individual productions have not yet been released, so adaptations and casts are still to be announced.

Some shows already belong to Teatro Primo's history: Anna Cappelli, Annibale Ruccello's monologue, has been staged by the company with Silvana Luppino, directed by Christian Maria Parisi, most recently in October 2024; Terapia di gruppo, from Christopher Durang's play, was presented in the past as a staged reading in Parisi's adaptation.

The venue and how to get there

Teatro Primo is a small independent venue in the Acciarello area of Villa San Giovanni. According to the theatre's technical sheet it has 64 seats, a low wooden stage of about 5 by 4 metres and a bar corner with small tables serving wine and snacks: with so few seats, booking is a good idea.

Villa San Giovanni railway station, on the Tyrrhenian line and also served by long-distance trains, is about half a kilometre away, a few minutes on foot. By car, take the Villa San Giovanni exit of the A2 motorway. The sources do not mention any parking reserved for the audience.

Villa San Giovanni and the Strait

Villa San Giovanni faces the Strait of Messina and is the main departure point for ferries to Sicily: if you are staying in Messina you can cross the Strait for a show, as the port is a short distance from the theatre. The name of Via delle Filande recalls the silk mills, a long-standing activity in the town.

Before or after the show you can stroll along the seafront or head to Cannitello, the village district overlooking the Strait. For places to eat or stay nearby, see the businesses in Villa San Giovanni, and for other shows in the province the events calendar.
