Between November and December 2026 the Treni del Torrone (Torrone Trains) return: day trips by RailTour, the brand of the Ferrovie in Calabria association, that take you by regional train to Bagnara Calabra on the Costa Viola to see Torrone di Bagnara IGP, the town's protected nougat, being made. There are five dates: Sunday 15 and Sunday 29 November, then 5, 13 and 20 December. As of 29 October the 15 November trip is fully booked on RailBook, where you can join a waiting list, while places are still available for 29 November; times, fares and programme for the December dates have not been published yet. In November trains leave from the Tyrrhenian line (Cosenza at 6.23am, Lamezia Terme Centrale at 7.32am, down to Gioia Tauro), arrive at Palmi and continue by coach to nougat factories, a ceramics workshop in Pellegrina, the village of Porelli and historic churches, returning from Bagnara at 6.32pm. Adult fares start at 29 euros depending on the departure station; lunch is optional and extra.

Five dates in November and December 2026

The Torrone Trains are day trips that combine a regional train ride with a visit to Bagnara Calabra, home of Torrone di Bagnara IGP. They are run by APS Ferrovie in Calabria, a non-profit railway association, under its RailTour brand, with bookings handled on the RailBook platform.

The 2026 calendar, announced on the Calabria Region's Calabria Straordinaria portal, has five dates: Sunday 15 and Sunday 29 November, when nougat production starts, then Saturday 5, Sunday 13 and Sunday 20 December, in the run-up to Christmas. As of 29 October the 15 November trip is fully booked on RailBook, where you can join a waiting list, while places are still available for 29 November; times, fares and the programme for the December dates have not been published yet.

Train times on 15 and 29 November

On both November dates the outward journey is on Regionale 6180, departing from Cosenza (6.23am), Castiglione Cosentino (6.30), Paola (6.55), Amantea (7.12), Lamezia Terme Centrale (7.32), Vibo Valentia-Pizzo (7.49), Rosarno (8.05) and Gioia Tauro (8.12), arriving at Palmi at 8.18am. RailBook lists 6.10am at Cosenza station as the event time, shortly before the train.

The return is on Regionale 5674, leaving Bagnara Calabra at 6.32pm and calling at Palmi (6.39), Gioia Tauro (6.46), Rosarno (6.54), Mileto (7.02), Vibo Valentia-Pizzo (7.13), Lamezia Terme Centrale (7.30), Amantea (7.48), Paola (8.05) and Castiglione Cosentino (8.29), arriving in Cosenza at 8.37pm. Times are set by Trenitalia and may change.

The day in Bagnara

At 8.30am reserved coaches leave Palmi station for the Cardone 1846 factory: a guided visit to see how Torrone di Bagnara IGP is made, with a tasting and the chance to buy. At 10.30 the group heads up to Pellegrina, to an artistic ceramics workshop, to watch the craftspeople at work and buy their pieces.

At midday you reach Porelli, the upper part of Bagnara, to visit two more IGP producers, Cundari Vincenzo and Careri Ferdinando; anyone buying at the three firms receives a small gift. With the Associazione Caravilla you then visit the Piccolo Museo del Borgo (village museum) and the church of the Confraternita dell'Immacolata, with a small tasting of local produce. Lunch is at 1pm in the centre; at 2.50pm the group meets in Piazzale Musella for the Carmine and Rosario churches, then walks to the station.

Prices and what is included

The fare depends on your departure station. Adults: 50 euros from Cosenza and Castiglione Cosentino, 46 from Paola and Amantea, 39 from Lamezia Terme Centrale, 33 from Vibo Valentia-Pizzo and 29 from Rosarno and Gioia Tauro. Children aged 4 to 12: from 35 to 25 euros on the same scale. Children up to 3: 10 euros; railway staff exempt from the train fare: 22 euros.

The price includes the return regional train, reserved coaches, tour leaders and guided visits (nougat factories, ceramics workshop, Porelli and the village museum, churches) with the tastings included in the visits. Lunch and purchases are extra. Booking also makes you a member of APS Ferrovie in Calabria for the current year.

Optional lunch at partner restaurants

Together with the trip you can book one of the set menus agreed by RailTour with two restaurants in Bagnara. At Ristorante Zefiro: a fish menu for 35 euros or a pizza menu for 25 euros, both ending with a torrone bavarois. At Ristorante Dal Pres: a fish menu for 35 euros or a pizza menu for 20 euros. The children's menu costs 15 euros at all partner restaurants. Dishes cannot be swapped.

Lunch is chosen on RailBook as an extra service, with a 5-euro deposit. The deadline is Tuesday 10 November for the 15 November trip and Tuesday 24 November for the 29 November trip. Alternatively, you can eat wherever you like during the 1pm break.

Booking, refunds and contacts

Bookings are only taken on RailBook, where you choose your departure station, fare and any extras: Torrone Train on 15 November and Torrone Train on 29 November. Places are limited and a booking is confirmed only once paid. The trip runs once the minimum number of participants is reached and goes ahead in any weather, unless safety is at risk.

Bagnara and its nougat

Bagnara Calabra looks out over the Tyrrhenian Sea in the middle of the Costa Viola, between Scilla and Palmi. Torrone is its signature product: archive records show that in the eighteenth century the monks of Bagnara's abbey were already making a nougat called «martiniana» from almonds and citrus-blossom honey, and today Torrone di Bagnara is protected as an IGP.

The route takes in two parts of town: Porelli, the upper quarter, and Pellegrina, a hillside village also known for its wheat bread.
