Favazzina: the pebble beach and the Tracciolino trail on the Costa Viola
Favazzina is a small coastal hamlet set between Scilla and Bagnara Calabra, in the heart of the Costa Viola. It is a place that lives by the sea: a bright pebble beach, deep, clear water and rocks rising just beyond the shore, far from the crowds of the better-known resorts.
Dominating the horizon is the imposing cable-stayed motorway viaduct, which has become the recognisable symbol of the area. From here begins the Tracciolino trail, the old mid-slope path leading towards Scilla, while not far away lies the hidden Cala Janculla, a wild little cove reached on foot. A quiet village where you can rediscover the slow rhythm of the sea.
The beach and sea of Favazzina
Favazzina beach is made of pale gravel and smooth pebbles, with some stretches of coarse sand and emerging rocks that make the seabed drop away quickly. It is the right place for those seeking clear, uncrowded water: the see-through sea reveals the stones several metres down, ideal for swimming and snorkelling among the rocks. The coast here faces west, so days end with sunsets that set the sea alight with the violet reflections typical of the Costa Viola. No large beach clubs or nightlife: just a few bars, the sound of waves on the gravel and the shadow of the viaduct towering over the bay. An authentic atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing day far from mass tourism.
The Tracciolino trail and Cala Janculla
One of the best-loved hikes on the Costa Viola starts from Favazzina: the Tracciolino trail, the old mid-slope path that linked the villages before the railway was built. The route runs high above the sea among terraces, Mediterranean scrub and tunnels carved into the rock, offering constant views over the Strait of Messina and, on clear days, of Sicily and the Aeolian Islands. Along the way, heading towards Scilla, you reach Cala Janculla, a small wild cove set among the rocks, one of the most striking on this stretch and accessible only on foot. It is a scenic but demanding route, with exposed sections: tackle it with proper shoes, enough water and avoiding the hottest hours of summer.
How to get to Favazzina
By car, take the A2 “del Mediterraneo” motorway (Salerno–Reggio Calabria), the very one that crosses the area on the imposing cable-stayed viaduct, the true landmark of Favazzina: the most convenient exits are Scilla and Bagnara, from where you descend to the hamlet along the main road. By train, Favazzina has a small station on the Tyrrhenian line, a regional-train stop handy for arriving without a car, from which the beach is a few minutes’ walk away. The nearest airports are Reggio Calabria (about 30 km) and Lamezia Terme (about 100 km). As it is a small village, in high season it is best to arrive early and park carefully in the permitted areas, then get around on foot.
