Bagnara Calabra: the swordfish town on the Costa Viola
Set between the sea and the slopes of the Aspromonte, Bagnara Calabra is one of the emblematic towns of the Costa Viola. Its wide beaches and crystal-clear water go hand in hand with an ancient seafaring history: here, swordfish hunting is a centuries-old tradition. It is also the home of the renowned PGI Torrone di Bagnara nougat.
A lively seafront, the typical boats with their long bow walkway, sunsets that set the sea aglow with violet and genuine seafood cuisine make Bagnara a perfect destination for those seeking beach, flavours and Calabrian authenticity.
What to see and do in Bagnara
The heart of Bagnara is its seafront, perfect for a stroll among palm trees, cafés and restaurants overlooking the water. The beaches stretch for kilometres, with sandy and pebbly sections and clear water often awarded for its quality. Above, the Ruggiero Tower, an old watchtower, dominates the scene, while the old town is marked by the Church of the Carmine and the monument to the Bagnarota, dedicated to the women who have always been the industrious symbol of the town. Don’t miss a taste of Torrone di Bagnara, an almond nougat recognised as a PGI product.
The sea of Bagnara and the swordfish hunt
Swordfish fishing in the Strait is a tradition documented since antiquity. In Bagnara it is carried out with the typical “passerelle”, boats fitted with a long bow walkway for throwing the harpoon and a very tall central mast from which the spotter scans the sea. Everything depends on that mast – the “sentinel”. The culture of the sea still animates the town: every summer the Gran Galà del Pescespada celebrates this history with music and tastings, and in the restaurants swordfish is the star of the table, from rolls to “alla ghiotta” stew.
How to get to Bagnara Calabra
By car, Bagnara is reached from the A2 “del Mediterraneo” motorway (Salerno–Reggio Calabria) via its own exit; the route is famous for the Sfalassà viaduct, one of the tallest arches in Europe. By train, Bagnara station is on the Tyrrhenian line, with regional connections along the coast. The nearest airports are Reggio Calabria (about 50 km) and Lamezia Terme (about 100 km). Scilla is just minutes away and Palmi lies to the north: Bagnara is a convenient base for exploring the whole Costa Viola.
