Gioia Tauro Plain: towns, food and itineraries
Local guides to Gioia Tauro, Cittanova, Taurianova, Seminara and the towns between olive groves and Aspromonte.
Between the Tyrrhenian Sea and Aspromonte
The Gioia Tauro Plain is an agricultural and urban area between the Tyrrhenian coast and the western foothills of Aspromonte. Gioia Tauro faces the sea, while Cittanova, Taurianova, Seminara and neighbouring towns preserve historic gardens, churches, ceramics, popular festivals and food traditions based on citrus fruit, olive oil, stroncatura pasta and inland produce. It is also a practical base for linking the Costa Viola with mountain villages.
The guides collected here treat the Plain as more than somewhere to pass through. They cover individual towns, sights, sports facilities, markets, events and flavours that reveal daily local life. Start in Gioia Tauro, plan a route through Cittanova and Taurianova, or continue towards Seminara, Oppido Mamertina and Aspromonte, choosing pages that suit the time available.
Getting around the Plain
A car is the easiest way to combine several towns in one day. Group stops by area and check opening times and dates for museums, festivals and markets. In summer, visit inland towns during the cooler hours and combine them with the coast at Gioia Tauro or the Costa Viola.
