Three Sundays of jazz at the Palazzo della Cultura in Locri

In November Locri hosts Zefiro in Jazz, a series of three concerts devoted to jazz and its crossovers with Italian songwriting, Latin music and contemporary sounds. All the dates fall on a Sunday at the Palazzo della Cultura, starting at 6.30pm: 1 November, which is also All Saints' Day, a public holiday in Italy, then 15 and 22 November 2026.

The series is organised by the Zefiro APS association together with other local partners; the poster also carries the logos of the Calabria Region, Calabria Straordinaria and the town of Locri. The association's name recalls Zephyrus, the west wind, which also appears in the name of ancient Locri Epizefiri, the Magna Graecia city whose remains lie a few kilometres from today's town. The early evening start makes it easy to catch a concert and still get back to other towns along the coast the same night.

1 November: Fabrizio Bosso and Julian Oliver Mazzariello

The series opens on Sunday 1 November with “Il cielo è pieno di stelle” (The sky is full of stars), a duo project by Fabrizio Bosso and Julian Oliver Mazzariello dedicated to Pino Daniele: trumpet and piano revisit the Neapolitan singer-songwriter's songs in the language of jazz.

Fabrizio Bosso is a trumpeter born in Turin in 1973; Julian Oliver Mazzariello is a pianist of Italian descent, born in 1978 in Hatfield, England. Pino Daniele, who died in 2015, always blended blues, jazz and Neapolitan song, and this tribute brings out the jazz side of his work. If you know Pino Daniele mainly from his records, this is a chance to hear his repertoire in an acoustic, instrumental setting, with the trumpet taking the place of the voice.

15 November: Petra Magoni and Finaz in “Equilibrismi”

On Sunday 15 November it is the turn of “Equilibrismi” (Balancing acts), a meeting between Petra Magoni's voice and Finaz's guitar: a set built on the interplay of voice, rhythm and experimentation, with just two musicians on stage.

Petra Magoni, born in Pisa in 1972, is a singer and actress; since 2003 she has been the voice of Musica Nuda, her duo with double bass player Ferruccio Spinetti, which among other awards won the Targa Tenco for best interpreters in 2006. Finaz is the stage name of Alessandro Finazzo, a guitarist, composer and producer born in Volterra in 1969 and co-founder, with Enrico “Erriquez” Greppi, of the Tuscan folk-rock band Bandabardò. Over his career he has worked with many Italian and international artists, from Franco Battiato to Goran Bregović.

22 November: Alamar with Ana Carla Maza

The series closes on Sunday 22 November with Alamar, the project of Ana Carla Maza on cello and vocals, with Manu Contrera on piano and keyboards and Jay Kalo on drums and percussion. The concert weaves together jazz, Latin rhythms and contemporary influences.

Ana Carla Maza was born in Havana in 1995: a cellist, singer and composer, she blends classical training with jazz, French chanson and Cuban and Latin American traditions, and studied between Madrid and Paris. Alamar is also the title of her new album of original songs, on tour in 2026, in which voice and cello explore roots, memory and love. The album was first presented live at the Blue Note in Milan in April 2026.

Getting to Locri

Locri lies on the Ionian coast on the SS106 coastal road, which links it with Siderno and Marina di Gioiosa Ionica to the north and with Bovalino and Reggio Calabria to the south. Coming from the A2 motorway, the most direct route is the Jonio-Tirreno expressway from the Rosarno exit to Marina di Gioiosa Ionica, then the SS106 heading south. From the Gioia Tauro plain there is also provincial road SP1, the former SS111, which runs through Cittanova and over Aspromonte down to Locri.

By train, get off at Locri station on the Ionian railway line. The sources do not mention dedicated parking or the street address of the Palazzo della Cultura: if you do not know the town, ask the organisers for directions on the numbers above. If you want to stay a few days on the coast, have a look at holiday rentals.

Locri and the Locride, before or after the concert

Locri has just under 12,000 inhabitants and is the administrative and cultural centre of the Locride area, as well as the seat of the diocese of Locri-Gerace. About 3 km from the centre lie the remains of Locri Epizefiri, one of the most important cities of Magna Graecia: the National Archaeological Museum and Park of Locri is on the SS106, in the Marasà district. In the town centre, on Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Palazzo Nieddu del Rio houses the municipal library and the Museo del Territorio, opened in 2018, with grave goods from the necropolises of the Locride.

Just inland is Gerace, a medieval hill town perched above Locri. Museum opening times vary and some visits must be booked in advance, so check before you go, especially on a Sunday afternoon.
