The show: two guitars and dance, Saturday 5 December at 6:30 pm

«Locura de Guitarras» is on stage on Saturday 5 December 2026 at 6:30 pm at the Teatro Comunale of Oppido Mamertina, on Via Cavour. The Spanish title means «guitar madness». The show carries two subtitles: the Amici della Musica programme calls it «Musica e danza d'autore» (original music and dance), while the AMA Calabria listing on the regional portal Calabria Straordinaria calls it «La notte delle chitarre spagnole», the night of Spanish guitars.

According to AMA Calabria, the repertoire ranges across flamenco, Latin jazz, bolero, pop and Mediterranean music. Original compositions and well-known international pieces are reworked as a conversation between the two guitars, balancing virtuosity, melody and rhythm, while dance turns the mood of each piece into movement. The set list for the evening has not been published.

Riccardo Ascani, Roberto Ippoliti and Simona Altieri

Locura de Guitarras is the project of guitarist Riccardo Ascani, described by the Italian periodical Controluce as one of the country's leading flamenco-jazz guitarists, with more than thirty years of concerts in theatres and clubs in Italy and abroad and appearances on Rai and Mediaset television. The duo was formed in 2014 with Roberto Ippoliti, a guitarist from Rome who started playing very young and was also a member of the group «Oceani». Together they have played in Yekaterinburg, Bern, Gaeta, Procida, Castelsardo, Nemi and at Rome's Auditorium Parco della Musica, among other places.

In Oppido the dance and choreography are by Simona Altieri. The duo has shared the stage with dance before: in April 2022, at the «Ennio Morricone» auditorium of Rome's Tor Vergata University, it played with choreographer and dancer Riccardo Senna.

Flamenco, Latin jazz and bolero for two guitars

In recent concerts the duo has alternated Ascani's own compositions with music by names that map its territory well: the Gipsy Kings, flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía, jazz pianist Chick Corea, Brazilian guitarist Luiz Bonfá and Latin American songwriters such as Consuelo Velázquez, Carlos Eleta Almarán and Elpidio Ramírez, arranged in a flamenco style (as Controluce reported in 2022).

The bolero here is not the 18th-century Spanish dance but the romantic song form born in Cuba in the late 19th century; Mexican songwriter Consuelo Velázquez's «Bésame mucho» is its best-known title. On two guitars these styles meet in the balance of virtuosity, melody and rhythm that AMA Calabria describes: flamenco brings the rhythmic drive, the bolero a singing melody, Latin jazz the harmony. The detailed programme for Oppido has not been released.

The evening within Synergia 51

Locura de Guitarras is the fifth of the seven shows of Synergia 51, the season the Amici della Musica «Nicola Antonio Manfroce» association of Palmi runs with AMA Calabria, the A.I.D.A. project and the Municipality of Oppido Mamertina. The season moved to Oppido because in Palmi the shows used to take place between the auditorium of the Casa della Cultura «Leonida Repaci» and the municipal Teatro «N. A. Manfroce», where part of the false ceiling gave way on 1 February 2026. The organisers' motto: «Theatre in Palmi doesn't stop, it just moves a little».

The full calendar is on the page of the Synergia 51 season in Oppido Mamertina. The guitars come two weeks after FlirTango's tango night on 21 November and two weeks before Roberto Cappello's piano recital on 19 December.

Tresilico, the Madonna delle Grazie and the olive groves of the plain

Oppido's centre now forms a single town with Tresilico and Zurgonadio, two old settlements considered districts of the city, whose winding streets contrast with the grid plan of the centre rebuilt after the 1783 earthquake. Tresilico is home to the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima delle Grazie: the parish church was raised to a Marian sanctuary on 2 July 1958 by Bishop Raspini, and it keeps an 18th-century marble Virgin of the Pilar and the statue of the Madonna delle Grazie by the Neapolitan sculptor Arcangelo Testa. The feast falls on 2 July.

Towards the Gioia Tauro plain the landscape is dominated by centuries-old olive groves, with trees of remarkable size, and by citrus orchards: olive oil is still the area's main resource. From Palmi you can travel on the season shuttle, included in the €15 ticket.
