International Moon Night

On Saturday 19 September 2026, at 8.30 pm, the Pythagoras Planetarium in Reggio Calabria will take part in the 17th edition of International Observe the Moon Night. The initiative, promoted globally by NASA and supported in Italy by the Italian Astronomical Society and the National Institute of Astrophysics, brings together enthusiasts, scholars and the curious every year for an evening dedicated to learning about and observing our natural satellite. The event will open with an introduction by Professor Angela Misiano, the Planetarium’s scientific director.

Event details

This will be followed by a talk by Professor Marco Romeo, an astrophysicist and expert at the Pythagoras Planetarium, entitled ‘Nostalgia for the Moon: the never-ending desire to walk on it together again’. The talk will trace the relationship between humanity and lunar exploration, focusing on the desire – which has never quite faded since the Apollo programme – to set foot on the Moon once more. The evening will continue with ‘The Sky Beneath the Dome’ and, weather permitting, with astronomical observations through the telescope led by the Planetarium’s staff. An opportunity to take a closer look at craters, lunar seas and other features of the starry sky.
