From 24 to 26 September 2026, Piazzale Ferrari in Reggio Calabria, in the Pentimele area next to the PalaCalafiore, will host EPIC Reggio ’26 – Performative Experiences of Civic Engagement, a new chapter in the Mana Chuma Teatro project, which forms part of the ReggioFest26 – Popular Culture programme. Three days dedicated to the convergence of theatre, music, poetry and performance research, in which contemporary forms of expression and cultural heritage engage in dialogue with the landscape of the Strait, the memories of the Mediterranean and the issues of the present day.

Event details

The festival kicks off on Thursday 24 September at 8.00 pm with ‘Circe’, a production by Teatro Ebasko conceived, written and directed by Simone Bevilacqua. The show reinterprets the myth of the Greco-Roman figure through street theatre and experimental sound and visuals, tackling themes such as marginalisation, gender difference, nature, migration and love. At 9.15 pm, this is followed by “Accamòra”, by and starring Massimo Barilla and Luigi Polimeni. A performance in which poetry in the Reggio Calabria dialect meets music and sound design, moving between roots, anticipation and a gaze towards the future. At 10.00 pm, “Per Brecht – Inno alla tenace fiducia nell’umano contro violenza e dittature” by Astragali Teatro takes to the stage, a musical reading dedicated to the civic and poetic power of Bertolt Brecht’s work. The evening concludes at 11.00 pm with a DJ set by Davide Crimi, featuring electronic music, rap, trap and experimental soundscapes. On Friday 25 September at 9.30 pm, the spotlight turns to the music of Nuhara, a Sicilian trio that weaves together ancient oral traditions and contemporary electronic sounds. Work songs, traditional instruments and electroacoustic textures build a bridge between memory and the present. The programme concludes on Saturday 26 September at 9.30 pm with Daniele Sepe and the concert ‘Spiritus Mundi’, a musical journey through Southern Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Ireland and Latin America. Folk, jazz and contemporary styles intertwine in an exploration that spans diverse cultures and traditions. On 25 and 26 September, at 9.15 pm, ‘La parola agita’ – a poetry series curated by Elizabeth Grech – also returns. The first session will be dedicated to the verses of Saleh Diab, the second to the works of Etel Adnan, in an exploration of languages, migration, memory and landscape. [gallery]
