From 31 July to 5 September 2026 the town of Palmi (Reggio Calabria), on the Costa Viola, hosts the Programma Agosto Palmese, its month-long summer festival organised by the Comune di Palmi. More than a month of free open-air events spreads across Piazza Primo Maggio, the Villa Comunale, the Teatro all'aperto Motta, the Parco dei Tauriani, the Tonnara beach and the streets of the old town, blending live music, theatre, book presentations, art exhibitions, open-air cinema, sunset treks and neighbourhood food festivals. A month of events in the heart of the Costa Viola

From 31 July to 5 September 2026 the town of Palmi (RC) lives its major summer programme, the Programma Agosto Palmese, promoted by the Comune di Palmi. More than a month of free-admission events unfolds across the Villa Comunale, Piazza Primo Maggio, the Teatro all'aperto Motta, the Parco dei Tauriani, the Tonnara and the streets of the old town, with the evening live music of the Officine Balena cultural association on Corso Tenente Aldo Barbaro almost every night. The programme weaves together live music, theatre, book presentations, exhibitions, open-air cinema, sunset treks and neighbourhood food festivals, with two much-awaited highlights: the White Night (Notte Bianca) on 29 August and, to close, the Paralympic Promotion Day on 5 September at the Villa Comunale. Live music, tribute acts and sunset concerts

The festival's musical heart beats on two main hubs. Piazza Primo Maggio hosts the big live shows and tribute acts: among others Frankie e Canthina Band (10 August), C&M Pop Live with Catia Riotto and Martina Mattiani (15 August), the Studio 54 Network concert (16 August), the Vasco Rossi tribute by Blaskom Band (19 August), the Big Sur Rock Band (24 August) and Nostalgia 90 (26 August). The Villa Comunale, instead, hosts the Sunset Concerts, recitals and songwriter moments, from the Saling Duo to Giuseppe Zema's percussion, from the Tom Sinatra Trio to 'Nota Sotto le Stelle' with Vincenzo Brando (12 August). On the jazz side, the Tauriani in Jazz dates (13, 22 and 27 August) take place in the setting of the Parco Archeologico dei Tauriani. The daily soundtrack is the evening live music on Corso Tenente Aldo Barbaro.

Theatre, books, exhibitions and open-air cinema

The Teatro all'aperto Motta hosts the drama season, with Euripides' 'The Trojan Women' (1 August), 'Per un pugno di voti' (13 August) and 'Il Padre della Sposa' (17 August). The Villa Comunale comes alive with open-air cinema through the 'Cinema Fusto' screenings (17, 18 and 20 August), while along Corso Garibaldi, in front of the Mondadori Point, the Kiwanis club runs a series of book presentations. Food festivals and flavours of the Piana and the Costa Viola

The food chapter is rooted in the flavours of the Piana and the Costa Viola. Among the neighbourhood sagre: the 5th Rione Macello Neighbourhood Festival (1 August), the Pizza Festival in Piazza Primo Maggio (4-6 August), the Aubergine Festival at Soccorso (9 August), the Stroncatura Festival at Piazzetta del Soccorso (10 August) - stroncatura being the typical Calabrian 'poor' pasta - and the Tartufo di Pizzo Festival in Piazza Amendola (21 August), featuring the famous 'tartufo' ice cream. Palmi, town of the Varia and its heritage

Palmi is the 'terrace' of the Costa Viola and, above all, the town of the Varia, inscribed since 2013 on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage as part of the Network of Italian great shoulder-borne processional structures (together with the Gigli of Nola, the Faradda dei Candelieri of Sassari and the Macchina di Santa Rosa of Viterbo). The Varia is an imposing votive float about 16 metres high and weighing around 20 tonnes, dragged on the shoulders by the 'mbuttaturi. It should be made clear that the 2026 edition of the Varia has been cancelled and postponed to 2027, so the procession does not take place this year: the shoulder-borne machines heritage theme nonetheless remains present in the calendar through the 'Rete Macchine a Spalla' exhibition and conference on 27 August at the Villa Comunale, while the Carrettieri della Varia association runs the Beer Pong on 12 August. The area offers other symbols: the Tonnara beach with the Scoglio dell'Ulivo, an islet crowned by a centuries-old olive tree; the Monte Sant'Elia belvedere, the 'Balcony over the Tyrrhenian' at 582 metres above the sea, from which - according to tourist sources - on the clearest days one might glimpse the Aeolian volcanoes and Etna (the evocative 'view of three volcanoes' is a recurring but not firmly verified claim); and the 'Leonida Repaci' House of Culture, a rich museum complex named after the Palmi writer who founded the Viareggio Prize.
