Chianalea di Scilla: the fishermen’s village on the sea
Chianalea is the oldest part of Scilla and one of the most photographed corners of Calabria: a cluster of fishermen’s houses built right at the water’s edge, separated only by very narrow alleys and steps that lead straight into the sea. This is why it is nicknamed the “little Venice” of the South.
Here the boats moor in front of the doorways, the restaurants serve fish with tables almost on the water and every glimpse frames the sea and Ruffo Castle. An intimate, romantic place, perfect to enjoy slowly, especially at sunset.
The village on the water and its alleys
Strolling through Chianalea means getting lost among alleys just a few steps wide, archways, little stairways and small squares overlooking the sea. The fishermen’s houses, leaning one against the other, have their door on the alley and their “marina” at the back, where the boats were once hauled ashore. It is a village to experience on foot, letting yourself be surprised by the glimpses between the houses, with the sea literally entering the urban fabric. Boat trips along the Costa Viola also set off from here.
The Church of San Giuseppe and the seafood restaurants
The spiritual heart of the village is the Church of San Giuseppe, facing the sea and tied to the fishermen’s devotion. All around, Chianalea is famous for its restaurants and seafood trattorias, where you can enjoy swordfish, seafood starters and traditional dishes with tables a step from the water. It is the perfect place for a romantic dinner or a sunset aperitif, when the village lights are mirrored in the sea. Don’t miss the striking view of Ruffo Castle that closes the panorama.
How to get to Chianalea
Chianalea is the northern quarter of Scilla and is reached on foot from the centre in a few minutes. By car you reach Scilla via the A2 “del Mediterraneo” motorway (Scilla or Bagnara exit) and by train via Scilla station on the Tyrrhenian line; the village is a limited-traffic area, so it is best to park in the designated zones and continue on foot. The nearest airports are Reggio Calabria and Lamezia Terme. To admire Chianalea from above, climb up to Ruffo Castle: the view of the houses on the water is unforgettable.
