Aspromonte, the mountain between two seas

Aspromonte fills the southern tip of Calabria and brings together remarkably different landscapes: high-altitude woods, seasonal rivers, waterfalls, giant rock formations and villages overlooking either the Tyrrhenian or Ionian Sea. The National Park and UNESCO Global Geopark protect a territory where nature, geology and local culture are closely connected. This collection leads from the heart of the massif to the towns on its slopes, with guides to places, flavours and stories from inland Reggio Calabria.

Start with the general National Park guide, then choose an itinerary by theme: trails and viewpoints, traditional products, restaurants, or villages such as Sant’Eufemia d’Aspromonte, Oppido Mamertina and Delianuova. Each page helps you combine a day in the mountains with the Costa Viola. They may look very close on the map, but driving times on mountain roads should always be planned carefully.

How to prepare for your visit

Choose the side of the mountain and your starting point first. Gambarie is a useful base for the central area, while Mammola, the Greek-speaking area and the towns above the Gioia Tauro Plain lead to different routes. Before hiking, always check the weather, trail conditions and difficulty on the Park Authority website; on quieter routes, using an official guide is the safest choice.
