The Suppliants

Arena Alberto Neri · Reggio di Calabria, Costa Viola, Calabria

9 August 2026

The 41st edition of CatonaTeatro hosts one of the most eagerly awaited events of the summer theatre season. On Sunday 9 August, at the Alberto Neri Arena in Catona, Aeschylus’ The Suppliants will be staged in a new production directed by Moni Ovadia and Mario Incudine. Following its huge success ten years ago at the Greek Theatre in Syracuse, the production returns with a revamped staging that captures the full power of classical tragedy through a contemporary interpretation, capable of both moving and provoking thought.

Event details

Performed entirely in song, with lyrics in Sicilian enriched by elements of modern Greek and Arabic, the production transforms Aeschylus’s masterpiece into a popular work of great theatrical impact. The original music by Mario Incudine, inspired by the sounds of the Mediterranean – spanning Sicily, Greece and the Maghreb – accompanies a narrative that focuses on themes which remain extraordinarily relevant today: the right to asylum, freedom, women’s dignity and the value of hospitality.
