The Poetics of Truth
Pinacoteca Domus Aquae · Galatro, Costa Viola, Calabria
8 November 2026 – 22 November 2026
From 8 to 22 November 2026 the Pinacoteca Domus Aquae in Galatro, at Via Diaz 20, hosts The Poetics of Truth (La Poetica del Vero), a tribute exhibition to Renato Guttuso, one of the best-known Italian painters of the 20th century. The exhibition is built around the idea of “truth” as the observation of life, society and everyday experience, and around the Sicilian painter's relationship with reality and the human figure. It is promoted by the GalatroArte APS association. The opening is on Sunday 8 November at 4pm. Opening hours, admission and the list of works on display have not yet been published: it is worth contacting the association before you visit.
The exhibition: dates, venue and theme
The Poetics of Truth (La Poetica del Vero) runs from Sunday 8 to Sunday 22 November 2026 at the Pinacoteca Domus Aquae in Galatro, at Via Diaz 20. It is a tribute exhibition to Renato Guttuso and the expressive power of his painting.
According to the presentation published by the Calabria Region, the exhibition focuses on the artist's relationship with reality and with the human dimension: scenes, bodies and life stories turned into images of great intensity. The common thread is “truth”, understood as a way of looking at life, society and everyday experience, and it is the key visitors are invited to use to rediscover Guttuso's pictorial language.
Who was Renato Guttuso
Renato Guttuso was born in Bagheria, near Palermo, at the end of 1911 and died in Rome in 1987. He is regarded as one of the leading figures of 20th-century Italian realism: his painting portrayed work in the fields, social struggles, war, everyday life and the landscapes of Sicily, with bright colours and strongly drawn figures.
Among his best-known works are the Crucifixion of 1941, which caused a great deal of controversy at the time, and La Vucciria of 1974, the large canvas devoted to Palermo's historic market. The link between observed reality and its transformation into painting is exactly the theme the Galatro exhibition takes as its title.
The works on display
The sources published so far do not list the works or say how many are on show, nor do they specify whether they are original paintings or prints by Guttuso, reproductions or works by other artists created as a tribute. If you are travelling to see a particular piece, check before you set off.
As the official presentation describes it, the exhibition is organised around a theme rather than a chronology: “truth” as the observation of life and society. The opening is on Sunday 8 November at 4pm at the Pinacoteca, according to GalatroArte's official invitation, which subtitles the show «Omaggio a Renato Guttuso» (A tribute to Renato Guttuso). No guided tours or talks have been announced.
The organisers: the GalatroArte APS association
The exhibition is promoted by the GalatroArte APS association, a local cultural group that works to promote Galatro's artistic heritage. Its events include the Estemporanea di pittura, an open-air painting competition that reached its sixth edition in August 2024, inviting painters to portray the streets, corners, views and people of the village, with free registration for artists and cash prizes.
In 2024 the association gave galatroarte@virgilio.it and +39 338 382 0564 as its contact details: they remain the most direct way to ask about the exhibition until opening hours and visiting arrangements are published.
Opening hours, admission and practical information
As of late October 2026, neither the Pinacoteca's opening hours during the exhibition nor the admission terms have been announced: the sources do not say whether entry is free or ticketed, or whether you need to book. It is also unclear whether the exhibition is open every day or only on certain days.
The practical advice is to contact GalatroArte before you go, especially if you are travelling a long way or coming as a group. The venue is at Via Diaz 20, in the village itself; the sources do not mention dedicated parking or accessibility for visitors with disabilities, so ask about these when you get in touch.
How to get to Galatro
Galatro lies inland in the Gioia Tauro plain, in the valley of the Metramo river. From the A2 motorway, take the Rosarno exit, follow the SS682 Jonio-Tirreno road for a short stretch and then climb to the village on provincial roads: it is about 14 kilometres, roughly twenty minutes by car.
If you are travelling by train, the nearest station is Rosarno, on the Tyrrhenian line, about fifteen kilometres away: for the last stretch you will need your own transport or a local bus, so check connections in advance. From the Ionian coast, the same Jonio-Tirreno road links the Marina di Gioiosa Ionica area with the plain.
Galatro, its spa and the surrounding area
Galatro is best known for its spa: the sulphurous waters, rich in sulphur and bicarbonates, are used to treat respiratory and joint conditions, together with natural thermal mud. The spa works on a seasonal basis, though: in 2026 the season opened on 8 June, so in November check which services are available.
A visit to the exhibition can be combined with a drive around the plain: Laureana di Borrello, Cinquefrondi and Polistena are each about a quarter of an hour away by car. For other events in the province in the same weeks, see the events calendar.
