The concert: Trio Felix at the Teatro Comunale on Saturday 14 November
On Saturday 14 November 2026 at 6:30 pm Trio Felix plays the Teatro Comunale of Oppido Mamertina. It is the third of the seven shows in Synergia 51. The evening has a different title in each source: «Dal Lied alla canzone» (From Lied to song) in the programme of Palmi's Amici della Musica, and «Dall'800 ai nostri giorni fra canti e danza» (From the 1800s to today in song and dance) on the AMA Calabria listing. Both describe the same route. It starts with chamber music from central Europe, goes on through Italian opera, ragtime and tango, and ends with Neapolitan song.
Nine composers are on the programme: Conradin Kreutzer, Franz Schubert, Giuseppe Verdi, Gioachino Rossini, Joseph Horovitz, George Gershwin, Astor Piazzolla, Francesco Paolo Tosti and Gaetano Lama. The titles of the pieces have not been published. The three musicians introduce the music briefly and talk with the audience from time to time, but the evening is still a chamber concert.
The performers: Marilena Gaudio, Gianni Ciliberti and Flavio Peconio
Trio Felix brings together soprano, clarinet and piano. Schubert wrote one of his last works for these three. In Oppido the line-up is soprano Marilena Gaudio, Gianni Ciliberti on clarinet and Flavio Peconio on piano.
Marilena Gaudio graduated in singing at 21 from the «Niccolò Piccinni» Conservatory in Bari. She sings both in concert and in opera, where her roles have included Violetta and Tosca. Flavio Peconio trained in the Bari piano school and has won national and international competitions, as a soloist and in chamber groups. He has performed in Italy, elsewhere in Europe and in the United States, and he teaches piano at a conservatory.
The trio played a similar programme in 2022, in Novi Ligure and Oristano. Peconio was on piano and Giacomo Piepoli on clarinet, and the music went from German Lied to Neapolitan song, by way of Horovitz and Piazzolla.
The Lied and music for soprano, clarinet and piano
Lied is simply the German word for «song». In the 19th century it came to mean the art song for voice and piano, often set to poems by Goethe, Schiller or Heine, and Franz Schubert is the composer most closely tied to it. Add a clarinet to the piano and you get a small repertoire of its own. Its best-known work is Der Hirt auf dem Felsen («The Shepherd on the Rock»), D 965. Schubert wrote it in 1828, in the last months of his life, for the soprano Anna Milder-Hauptmann, and he gave the voice and the clarinet equally demanding parts.
Conradin Kreutzer (1780–1849) lived at the same time as Schubert and wrote the opera Das Nachtlager in Granada. He too wrote for soprano, clarinet and piano: Das Mühlrad is his. The Oppido programme names the composers but not the pieces, so the musicians will say on the night which works they are playing.
From Verdi and Rossini to Gershwin, Piazzolla and Neapolitan song
From Germany the programme moves to Italy with Verdi and Rossini, the two great names of 19th-century Italian opera. Rossini also wrote vocal chamber music, such as the Soirées musicales collection from the early 1830s. Then it crosses the Atlantic. In George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue (1924) the clarinet plays the famous opening glissando. Joseph Horovitz (Vienna 1926 – London 2022), whose concertos often lean towards jazz, wrote a concerto and a sonatina with piano for the clarinet. Like Astor Piazzolla, he studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger.
The last stop is Naples. Francesco Paolo Tosti (Ortona 1846 – Rome 1916) taught singing at the English royal court and wrote more than five hundred songs. Two of them became classics of Neapolitan song: 'A vucchella, to words by D'Annunzio, and Marechiare, to words by Salvatore Di Giacomo. Gaetano Lama (Naples 1886–1950) wrote Reginella (1917) and Silenzio cantatore (1922) with the lyricist Libero Bovio.
The evening within Synergia 51
Synergia 51 is the season of the Amici della Musica «Nicola Antonio Manfroce» association of Palmi, which has been running concerts since 1975 and marked fifty years of activity in autumn 2025. It is organised with AMA Calabria, the A.I.D.A. project and the Municipality of Oppido Mamertina. On 1 February 2026 part of the false ceiling of Palmi's Teatro «N. A. Manfroce» gave way, so the season moved to Oppido. The organisers' motto is «Theatre in Palmi doesn't stop, it just moves a little».
The full calendar is on the Synergia 51 season page. The concert before this one is on Saturday 31 October, with swing from the Roma Jazz Quintet. A week after the trio, on Saturday 21 November, FlirTango brings an evening of tango that picks up the Piazzolla thread.

Oppido Vecchia, the town wiped out by the 1783 earthquake
The trio's programme starts in the 1800s, and today's Oppido is only slightly older: it was rebuilt after the earthquake of 5 February 1783, which destroyed the medieval town. Only ruins remain of Oppido Vecchia. It was probably founded in the 9th century and had strong walls around it. A gate stood at each end of the long main street, lined by the main buildings, among them the Cathedral with the bishop's palace and the Seminary. The walls and gates can still be clearly seen. Next to the north gate stands the Angevin-Aragonese castle, still well preserved, which shows traces of Byzantine or Norman origins. Alexandre Dumas came here in the 19th century and wrote that Oppido had «the fate of all beautiful women: desired in their youth, scorned in their decline, a source of horror after their death».
The Teatro Comunale is on Via Cavour. From Palmi you can take the season's shuttle, which is included in the €15 ticket.
