On Saturday 31 October 2026 the seafront of Catona, the northernmost district of Reggio Calabria, hosts “Halloween tra le moto” (Halloween among the motorbikes), a party organised by the ASD Sand Riders Racing Team, the club behind the Marecross beach races. What happens at “Halloween tra le moto”

“Halloween tra le moto” is the Sand Riders' Halloween party on the sandy shore of Catona, on Saturday 31 October 2026. The poster presents it as a surprise for younger children ahead of the Marecross, the motocross race on sand that the club brought to Catona beach in 2025, mixing Halloween, sand and a love of two wheels.

The announced programme has two parts. During the day the party is for children: costumes, sweets and motorbikes on the sand, under the slogan “our little monsters are warming up their engines”. In the evening it is the adults' turn, with a dinner show, street food stands and a live concert by the band I Notos.

It is therefore not yet known whether entry to the party is free, how much the dinner show costs or whether it needs booking. The sources also do not explain how the children's motorbike activity will work, for example whether kids need their own bike and protective gear or have to register: worth asking the organisers before heading to the beach with the family.

The organisers: Sand Riders and the Catona Marecross

ASD Sand Riders Reggio Calabria is the club that in 2025 brought a national-level motocross race on sand to Reggio for the first time. On 2 November 2025, on the Catona shore, it ran the fifth round of the Italian Marecross Championship together with Motornext Calabria, the first Carmelo Ferrante Memorial, dedicated to a member of the group who died young: about a hundred riders from several southern regions, racing from 8.30am to 5pm and prize-giving in the afternoon.

At the time, club president Carmelo Virduci and secretary Vincenzo Campisi said they hoped it would be the first of many editions, and the club used drip mats under the bikes to keep fluids off the sand. Mayor Giuseppe Falcomatà described it as an event to bring back. The date of the 2026 Marecross has not been announced yet.

I Notos, ethno-folk-pop from Reggio

The evening concert is by Nòtos (listed as I Notos in the official listing), a Reggio Calabria ethno-folk-pop band that reworks Calabrian folk tradition with a contemporary sound. The band is led by Salvatore Flachi; its members include singer Loris Nucera, who has described the project as a family band formed about four years ago that has grown quickly, with a busy tour in 2026.

On 23 August 2026, for example, Nòtos closed the third edition of “Estate in festa – Note di Pace” in piazza Rupà in Vinco, in front of a packed square. In Catona they will play during the evening part of the party, alongside the dinner show and street food; the concert time has not been announced yet.

How to get to Catona seafront

Catona is the northernmost district of Reggio Calabria, between Gallico to the south and Villa San Giovanni to the north. By car, on the A2 motorway spur into Reggio, drivers coming from the north can exit at Campo Calabro or Reggio Calabria Gallico; the Catona-Arghillà junction only has an exit for traffic heading towards Salerno, that is, coming from central Reggio. If you are arriving from Sicily, ferries land at Villa San Giovanni, a few kilometres away.

The district has its own railway station and is linked to the city centre by urban bus routes. The sources do not mention dedicated parking or road closures on the seafront: with a party that carries on into the evening, it is worth checking traffic arrangements before you set off.

Catona, the beach on the Strait

Catona looks out over the Strait of Messina, with Sicily directly opposite. It was a separate municipality from 1811 to 1927, when it was merged into Reggio. In Roman times the Via Popilia reached Catona, and the crossing point to Sicily known as “ad fretum ad statuam” is thought to have been in Catona; Dante mentions it in canto VIII of Paradise as one of the corners of the Kingdom of Naples.

The beach, about one and a half kilometres long, is a Site of Community Importance (code IT9350183). On the seafront a monument about 15 metres tall recalls the tradition that in 1464 Saint Francis of Paola set off from Catona and crossed the Strait on his cloak; in summer the Arena Neri hosts the CatonaTeatro festival.
