History and meaning of the Varia

The Varia, brought from nearby Messina in 1582 after a plague, depicts the Assumption of Maria Santissima della Sacra Lettera into heaven through hundreds of costumed participants. Suspended at the top of the structure is the so-called Animella, a little girl representing the Madonna, a figure charged with religious and anthropological meaning. Tied to the structure, the other children represent angels, while at the foot of the float stand the apostles and, finally, the bearers, known as mbuttaturi. The festival blends popular devotion, traditional engineering and collective memory into one of the most spectacular events of southern Italy.
