Stockfish Festival of Mammola 2026 – Aspromonte, Calabria

Centro storico di Mammola · Mammola, Costa Viola, Calabria

9 August 2026

On 9 August 2026 the village of Mammola celebrates the Sagra dello Stocco, the most identity-defining food festival of inland Reggio Calabria and one of the landmark events of the Aspromonte mountains. Stockfish is served here in all its traditional variations — with potatoes, beans, chilli pepper and onions, or as a cold salad — at food stands lining the streets of the old town.
Stoccafisso di Mammola is a recognised Traditional Agri-Food Product (PAT): dried cod from northern seas is soaked in the local spring waters, a process that shapes its texture and flavour and makes it unique in Italy. For centuries this craft has made Mammola the Calabrian capital of stockfish.
Far more than a tasting event, the festival is a moment of deep cultural identity for the community. Food becomes a language of memory and encounter, through which Mammola shares its roots with visitors from everywhere. Alongside the star dish, stands offer typical Calabrian products, from Bergamotto di Reggio Calabria PDO to Capocollo di Calabria PDO.
Free admission, suitable for all ages. The perfect occasion to combine an authentic Calabrian food festival with a journey through the Aspromonte — villages, nature and culture, a short drive from the Costa dei Gelsomini and the Costa Viola.

H2: Sagra dello Stocco in Mammola: Calabria's Oldest Food Festival

The Sagra dello Stocco di Mammola (Stockfish Festival) is one of Calabria's most authentic food festivals. Founded in 1979 by the local Pro Loco, it takes place every year on 9 August in the heart of a medieval village at the foot of Aspromonte National Park, in the province of Reggio Calabria. The 2025 edition was the 45th — nearly half a century of unbroken tradition. If you're looking for what to see in Calabria in August, this is one of the region's most genuine collective rituals.

Why Dried Cod Became the Signature Dish of a Mountain Village

It's the paradox that makes Mammola unique: a dried cod from Northern Europe became the emblem of an inland Calabrian village. Stockfish reached Mammola around the 1500s, arriving from Norway and Flanders; what makes it exceptional is the artisanal processing and the pure water of the mountain springs in the Aspromonte–Serre range, whose chemical and physical composition gives the fish an unmatched quality. Historically the stockfish was left to soak for days in local streams, slowly rehydrating until it reached the perfect texture. For these qualities, "Stocco di Mammola" is listed in Italy's National Register of Traditional Agri-Food Products by the Ministry of Agriculture — and the village has always been known as the "Town of Stockfish."

What to Eat: Stocco alla Ghiotta and Beyond

The signature dish is stocco alla ghiotta: slow-cooked with potatoes, black olives, tomatoes and peppers, in a recipe that captures the soul of Mammola's cooking. Alongside it you'll find caserecce pasta and countless preparations built on the fish's versatility, served along Largo Magenta and Piazza Ferrari. Tastings begin at 7:00 PM and run late into the night. Worth trying off-season too: the village trattorias serve it year-round

Music, Giants and the Burning Pupazza: the Night of 9 August

The festival unfolds through the streets of the medieval village, past ancient churches, noble palaces, exhibitions by local artists and craft stalls, in a folk atmosphere of dancing, singing and performances — including the traditional dance of the "Giants." The night closes at midnight in Piazza Ferrari with the famous "Pupazza infuocata," a fire puppet dancing to the rhythm of the tarantella. It's the moment that fills the square every year, and reason enough to make the trip.

How to Get to Mammola and Where to Stay

Mammola is reached via the SS 682 Jonio–Tirreno highway (Gioiosa Ionica–Mammola exit), about an hour from Reggio Calabria and thirty minutes from the Ionian coast. On 9 August the historic centre is closed to traffic: arrive in the early afternoon and park in the outer areas. To stay longer, accommodation across the Locride and the Ionian coast makes an ideal base for combining the festival with a holiday between sea and mountains.
