On 7 August 2026 the seafront of Gioia Tauro hosts the Sagra della Struncatura, one of the most authentic food festivals of the Costa Viola and the province of Reggio Calabria. The star of the evening is struncatura, a Calabrian pasta similar to bavette but thicker and darker, deeply rooted in the rural history of the region.
Born as a dish of the poor, struncatura was once made from the by-products of wheat milling, gathering flour, bran and grain from the floors of the mills. From symbol of hardship to culinary excellence: its spread was also driven by merchants from the Amalfi Coast, who helped turn it into a specialty appreciated far beyond Calabria.
At the festival, struncatura is served in its most famous version, dressed with a sauté of garlic, tomatoes, chilli pepper and anchovies, finished with grated cheese that brings out its bold character. Alongside the signature dish, visitors can discover other specialties of Calabrian cuisine in a tasting journey that tells the story of the whole territory.
Live music shows accompany dinner, turning the evening into a celebration of food and community by the sea.
