Peppe Sapone live in Drosi di Rizziconi, 14 August 2026

Piazza San Martino, Drosi · Rizziconi, Costa Viola, Calabria

14 August 2026

On Friday 14 August 2026 at 9 pm, piazza San Martino in Drosi hosts the Peppe Sapone concert, organised by the Drosi Attiva association as part of the «Rizziconi Agosto 2026» programme. Peppe Sapone is a «mastro cantaturi», a master singer of the Calabrian popular tradition: tarantella, song and serenade, performed live with a band of Calabrian musicians. The poster describes the evening as devoted to the great tradition, between folk sounds, emotion and compelling rhythms, and carries the «Peppe Sapone Tour 2026» logo. It is the eve of Ferragosto, the moment of the year when the villages of the plain fill up and traditional music goes back to being something danced in the square rather than merely listened to. The concert closes two consecutive Drosi Attiva evenings, after the Aubergine Festival on 13 August in the same square.

The concert: 14 August, 9 pm, piazza San Martino

Peppe Sapone plays in Drosi, a hamlet of Rizziconi, on Friday 14 August 2026 at 9 pm, in piazza San Martino. It is organised by the Drosi Attiva association; the evening is part of the municipality's «Rizziconi Agosto 2026» programme, whose poster also carries the «Peppe Sapone Tour 2026» logo.

The official description is spare: an evening devoted to the great tradition, between folk sounds, emotion and compelling rhythms. It is the eve of Ferragosto, the night when the villages of the plain are at their fullest.

Who Peppe Sapone is

Peppe Sapone is a Calabrian artist who carries forward the folk repertoire of his region. He is presented as a «mastro cantaturi» — a master singer — of the Calabrian tradition, accompanied by a band of local musicians.

His repertoire is that of the tarantella and of folk song: music born for the feast and for dancing, not for seated listening. In the Calabrian folk scene he is a recognised name, present in the circuits that keep this music alive across patronal feasts, food festivals and summer programmes.

The poster does not list the line-up accompanying him at the Drosi date.

The tarantella in the plain

In this part of Calabria traditional music is not a museum subject. The diatonic accordion, the tambourine, the chitarra battente and the zampogna are still played at feasts, and dancing in the square is the natural form in which this music exists: it is played so that someone will dance.

A concert like this, on the evening of 14 August in a hamlet square, should be read that way: it is not a revival, it is the moment the repertoire returns to its context. In the same programme, on 29 August, Rizziconi devotes a whole evening to the theme with the Calabrian Tarantella Night in piazza Lo Sardo, and on 18 August Etnosound play in Spina.

Drosi and the evening before

Drosi is the most populous hamlet of Rizziconi: just over eight hundred inhabitants two kilometres from the centre. Its ancient name was Drusium and it was a Statio Romana along the Via Popilia, the consular road running down towards the crossing to Sicily.

The concert is the second of two consecutive evenings curated by Drosi Attiva in the same square: on 13 August, from 9 pm, the third edition of the Aubergine Festival takes place, with live music by Martina Mattiani, Enzo Argirò and Alberto Catania.

Practical information

The «Rizziconi Agosto 2026» poster lists no tickets, advance sales or prices for the concert, which takes place in a public square in the village.

Drosi is reached by car from Rizziconi, two kilometres from the centre; the reference exit on the A2 is Gioia Tauro and the municipality is crossed by the SS 111 road from Gioia Tauro to Locri. It is a small village with narrow streets: on the evening of 14 August it is worth arriving early.

For dinner before the concert there are the places listed under where to eat in Rizziconi and the other businesses in the town. The full programme is on the Summer in Rizziconi 2026 page; if you are staying a few days, there are holiday homes in the area.
