Eco-Teatro: art, theatre and recycling at the Aragonese Castle

Castello Aragonese · Reggio di Calabria, Costa Viola, Calabria

24 October 2026 – 30 October 2026

From 27 to 30 October 2026 the Aragonese Castle in Reggio Calabria hosts “Eco-Teatro”, an immersive art exhibition of papier-mâché and recycled-material artworks and stage sets made by students of the city's “T. Campanella – M. Preti – A. Frangipane” art school, with video projections, soundscapes and virtual reality. It opens on Tuesday 27 October at 5pm with performances by Adexo APS; on Thursday 29 October there is an eco-creative workshop for children at 4.30pm and a talk on reuse at 6pm. The programme starts on Saturday 24 October at 5pm with a free guided city walk leaving from the castle. It is a side event of the Facce da Bronzi comedy festival run by Calabria dietro le quinte; entry is with the castle ticket, 5 euros full price and 2 euros for residents.

Dates and programme

Eco-Teatro fills the rooms of the Aragonese Castle in Reggio Calabria from Tuesday 27 to Friday 30 October 2026. The programme starts a few days earlier: on Saturday 24 October at 5pm there is a free guided city walk leaving from the castle. The exhibition opens on Tuesday 27 at 5pm, with theatre and music performances by Adexo APS.

Thursday 29 October is the environment day: at 4.30pm there is an eco-creative workshop for children and at 6pm a talk on reusing and recycling materials, both run by Fare-eco. For visiting times the poster refers to the castle's opening hours: 8.30am to 1pm in the morning and 2.30pm to 7pm in the afternoon.

The exhibition: theatre, salvaged materials and virtual reality

At the heart of the project are artworks and stage sets in papier-mâché and salvaged materials, made by students of Reggio Calabria's “T. Campanella – M. Preti – A. Frangipane” art school and inspired by classical and contemporary theatre. The idea is to show how objects headed for the bin can become a means of expression and take on new shapes and meanings.

The route is completed by immersive spaces with video projections, soundscapes and virtual reality (VR) experiences that bring theatre traditions together with new technology. The exhibition is produced with Adexo APS, a creative arts association that also stages the performances at the opening.

City walk, children's workshop and a talk on reuse

The city walk on Saturday 24 October is led by the association “Il Giardino di Morgana”: it sets off at 5pm from the Aragonese Castle for a route through Reggio Calabria's best-known sights and its historic and cultural heritage. Taking part is free; the sources do not say whether you need to book, so it is worth asking the organisers.

On Thursday 29 October at 4.30pm Fare-eco's eco-creative workshop offers children hands-on activities about reusing materials and cutting waste. At 6pm, again run by Fare-eco, there is a talk on environmental sustainability and on more responsible everyday choices. Activities are in Italian.

Tickets, opening hours and contacts

For the exhibition the poster gives the entrance ticket to the Aragonese Castle: 5 euros full price and 2 euros reduced for residents. The city walk on 24 October is free. The castle is open from 8.30am to 1pm and from 2.30pm to 7pm.

The association's website also has the programme announcement, in Italian. The sources do not say whether the children's workshop needs advance registration, so ask first.

Facce da Bronzi and the organisers

Eco-Teatro is one of the side events of the eleventh Facce da Bronzi national cabaret festival, created and produced by the arts and performance association Calabria dietro le quinte APS. After stops in Milan and Rome, the festival ends in Reggio with the semi-final on 23 October and the final on 25 October at the Teatro Cilea: details are on the Facce da Bronzi festival page.

The castle programme is run in partnership with the City of Reggio Calabria, under the patronage of the Metropolitan City and co-funded by the Calabria Region through the PAC 2014-2020 cohesion programme, under its call for tourism and cultural promotion.

The Aragonese Castle and how to get there

The Aragonese Castle stands in Piazza Castello, between Via Aschenez and Via Possidonea, in central Reggio. Historical sources record a fortification here as early as the 6th century, but its present look, with two large crenellated towers, dates from Aragonese-era work in the second half of the 15th century. It was declared a national monument in 1897 and, after demolitions in the early 20th century, mainly the two towers survive.

The castle is right in the centre, a short way from Corso Garibaldi, and can be reached on foot from Reggio Calabria Centrale and Lido stations. By car, follow the bypass from the A2 motorway towards the centre; the sources do not mention dedicated parking. For more dates in town see the events calendar.
