The show: body, music and words for García Lorca

«De Pasión y de Música» opens Synergia 51 on Saturday 24 October 2026 at 6:30 pm at the Teatro Comunale of Oppido Mamertina, and is due to finish around 8 pm. Its subtitle, «Body, music and words for Federico García Lorca», sums up the idea: a tribute to the Andalusian poet that sets his verse in conversation with flamenco. The director's notes open with Pablo Neruda's portrait of him in his memoirs, «Confieso que he vivido»: «a kind of summary of the ages of Spain».

On stage, the cante is handed over to the poetry itself. The bailaoras turn the images of the poems into movement through different palos, the forms of flamenco, each with its own rhythm and mood, while the actress guides the audience into the poems and brings out the cadences suggested by dancers and musicians. The musicians stand for the poet's masculine soul; the dancers and the actress for his feminine one.

The performers: the Flamenco Algeciras company

The show is by the Flamenco Algeciras company, listed in the regional events feed as «Compagnia Algeciras Flamenco». Francisca Berton conceived, choreographed and directed it, and also dances as the solo bailaora, the lead dancer.

The official poster lists the cast: Sergio Varcasia and Matin Kashanaki on guitar, Ana Rita Rosarillo singing cante flamenco, Paolo Monaldi on percussion, Francisca Berton as solo bailaora, Marica Pugliese dancing and Erica Bianco as the actress. Seven performers cover the three elements UNESCO uses to describe flamenco, toque (guitar playing), cante (song) and baile (dance), plus the speaking voice that carries the poems. The organisers have not published biographies of the performers.

Lorca, cante jondo and the duende

Federico García Lorca, born in 1898 in Fuente Vaqueros near Granada, was a poet, playwright and musician. In June 1922 he was the most active supporter of the Concurso de Cante Jondo, the contest organised by composer Manuel de Falla at the Alhambra to rescue the oldest and deepest form of flamenco song. He wrote his Poema del cante jondo in 1921-22 but only published it in 1931; the Romancero gitano came out in 1928. From 1931 he directed La Barraca, a student theatre company funded by the Second Republic that took classical drama to villages free of charge: the director's notes credit it with 13 productions and over a hundred performances in sixty towns between 1932 and 1936.

In a 1933 lecture in Buenos Aires, Lorca described the duende, the mysterious force behind great flamenco, as «a power, not a work; a struggle, not a thought». He was shot in August 1936. In 2010 UNESCO inscribed flamenco on its list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

The opening night of Synergia 51

Synergia 51 is the season of the Amici della Musica «Nicola Antonio Manfroce» association of Palmi, which has been organising concerts since 1975 and marked fifty years of activity in autumn 2025, run together with AMA Calabria. After part of the false ceiling of Palmi's Teatro Manfroce gave way on 1 February 2026, the association moved its shows to Oppido Mamertina with the A.I.D.A. project and the town council, summing up the choice as «Theatre in Palmi doesn't stop, it just moves a little».

The flamenco evening opens a seven-show programme, described in full on the Synergia 51 season page. The following Saturday, 31 October, the same stage hosts the Roma Jazz Quintet with «Lo swing tra America e Italia», a journey between American standards and Italian swing.

The Teatro Comunale of Oppido Mamertina and how to get there

The Teatro Comunale of Oppido Mamertina, also known as the municipal Cinema-Teatro, stands on Via Cavour, near the primary school. Closed for about ten years, it reopened on 17 January 2026 thanks to a cooperation pact signed in February 2025 between the town council and the associations of the A.I.D.A. project; volunteers, local craftsmen and a fundraising campaign helped bring it back into use. The flamenco evening is the first Synergia 51 show in a hall that had stood idle for a decade until last January.

From Palmi the simplest way to get there is the season's transfer, included in the €15 ticket: call or message +39 379 154 4782 for the departure point and time. Oppido Mamertina lies inland in the Gioia Tauro plain, at the foot of the Aspromonte; if you drive, the theatre is on Via Cavour.
