A beach between history and nature

Tonnara takes its name from the old tuna fishery built in the early 1900s for swordfish, which drove the local economy for decades. The shore, with its distinctive pale colour, blends fine sand and small pebbles smoothed by the sea, its texture shifting with the tides. Behind it, the beach is sheltered by Mount Sant'Elia, "the balcony over the Tyrrhenian", whose crouching-lion shape dominates the whole bay. To the south stands the famous Olive Tree Rock, symbol of Palmi, while to the north lies the small harbour where fishermen sell the day's catch.

Beyond the Tonnara: the rest of Palmi’s coastline

Palmi’s coastline does not end at the Tonnara. Moving along the shore you come to the bay of Marinella, the stretch of Trachini and the Pietrenere-Scinà area, where the small landing place also lies. The seafront opens at Capo Barbi, the first stronghold of the Costa Viola, and takes in Punta Motta and the two main bays: an alternation of sandy strands, cliffs and sea caves carved into the rock.
